Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Partnering with the University Without Walls - Dorot program, the speaker will share his observations and experiences in creating a "virtual museum program" for senior citizens in New York. In this virtual museum program, the speaker gives free online lectures to seniors who may have difficulty leaving their homes; the lectures are focused on Chinese history where the speaker is currently located. Most have never been to China before. However, the speaker utilizes his travels and pictures of various museums of China to explore the history of China through museums and allows the seniors to explore Chinese history differently.
In one example, when discussing the Cultural Revolution in China during the 1960s, the speaker uses his images from the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre to illustrate the history but also to "bring" the museum to the seniors. This virtual museum presentation becomes a unique way to perform outreach services to anyone who may not be able to visit the museums in China as well.
Attendees will hear from the speaker's experiences and learn how to create such a program for their own museums: what are the best practices in creating "virtual museum programs" and how to conduct outreach services to their communities, to bring greater awareness of their collections, exhibitions and institutions.
